Growing Together ECF Pathways - Beth Waddicor

I am Beth. I studied English and History at Manchester Metropolitan and did my teacher training at the University of Manchester. I teach both English and History. I coordinate the PSHE curriculum at DVHS.

Why did you get into teaching?

I was inspired by my teachers at DVHS ( I went to school where I now teach). Teachers such as Diane Hayes and Janet Gregson who had a real passion for their subject which has in turn influenced me to have that passion.  I hopefully want to replicate the experience I had for others.

How has the ECF impacted on your classroom and work in school?

I have gained confidence in my practice through the regular feedback I get from a range of practitioners. This has ensured that my lessons are always looking to be at the next level.

What’s your biggest success to date?

Gaining a TLR in my first year as Character Curriculum Coordinator. I feel like I can impact students academically in my teacher role as well as helping them gain cultural capital through my role in PSHE.

How do you overcome challenges at school?

I overcome challenges by reflecting. Reflection is key to improve as well as leaning on staff for support and advice when needed. Resilience is key in teaching.

What are you hoping to do next with what you have learnt from the programme?

My next steps would be ideally to be a head of department, as I have a real passion for curriculum planning and ensuring there is diversity. I will carry on implementing all the tips into my teaching.

What support do you receive from your mentor and ECF Lead, and the impact they’ve had on you personally and professionally.

I feel like I have really progressed this year.  I have gained confidence. This is because of the fine tuning I am working on with my mentor. Looking at the theory and embedding this into lesson. I feel like they have confidence in me and motivate me to be better. I am pushed to grab all opportunities I can. Mental wellbeing is looked after and there always check ins to make sure I am okay.

What impact have the seminars had on your practice?

I feel like it has led me to reflect with different tips and techniques which I have embedded into lessons. I have grown in confidence with my pedagogical skills in the classroom.

What are the main reasons someone should consider completing a Teach First/ Aldridge Education ECF?

Completing a Teach First or Aldridge Education Early Career Framework (ECF) program offers unique advantages, especially for early career teachers (ECTs) who are looking for a supportive and structured start to their teaching journey. Both of these organizations offer distinct pathways for new teachers, combining professional development with opportunities to make a real impact on students’ lives.

How do you look after your well-being?

Exercise is key.  I train every Friday doing circuit training which will eventually lead to a 6 and a half non hour stop day raining money for Derian House children's hospice. I do not take work home ensuring home life and work are kept separate. Finally, getting those hours of sleep in are crucial.
